Busy summer for Thirsk Chiropractor

Thirsk Chiropractor Richard Skippings is having a busy summer with his involvement in sports and the treatment of sports men and women.  Richard has worked with the British Masters Athletics team for 16 years having attended six world championships, three European championships and numerous British Championships at both Indoor and Outdoor meetings.  This summer is no exception, starting with the British Championships in Birmingham at the beginning of July leading up to the European Championships in Ljubljana, Slovenia at the end of that month.  At both events Richard acted as the leader of the seven strong medical back up team which included a Doctor, a Physiotherapist, two other Chiropractors and two Sports Masseurs.  The British team had a very successful Championships finishing second in the medal table not far behind Germany who had the largest team of athletes. He has also started working with ProGolf Health in supporting professional golfers on the European tour.  Orientation weeks at the BMW Masters at Wentworth, the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond and the Dunhill Links Trophy will be followed, if all goes well, with increasing involvement next year to see Richard covering 10 – 15 tournaments on the European circuit.  Richard’s work in sports is not just about the treatment of injuries when they occur but also about injury prevention and fine tuning to ensure that the sportsperson functions at their optimum capability so that they can perform to the best of their ability.  Working with the ProGolf Health team allows Richard to be part of a long term programme of health and fitness management which also includes Doctors, Biomechanists, Strength and Conditioning coaches, Physical Therapists, Psychologists and, of course, liaising with the Golf coaches.  The programme is individually tailored to each golfer ensuring the best possible care.Richard doesn’t just work at sports events.  Apart from running his own clinic in Carlton Miniott, Thirsk he is the Chairman of the College of Chiropractors Faculty for Sport and Exercise and is also a member of the Education Board of the International Federation of Sports Chiropractic whose remit includes attempting to standardise sports chiropractic education around the world, training those sports chiropractors and organising teams to work at major sporting events like the World Games and the All Africa Games.  As such he is involved in the post graduate education of chiropractors who wish to improve their knowledge of sport and exercise related injuries and lectures both in the UK and abroad.  All of this doesn’t leave much time to fit in his own sporting past times of Golf at Thirsk & Northallerton Golf Club and Hockey with umpiring for Thirsk Hockey Club and playing in goal for City of York Vintage team.
