Fire Ravages the Black Lion

Fire has caused severe damage to the Black Lion public house in Thirsk Market Place. No one was injured but two people sleeping at the premises were taken to the Friarage Hospital for checks. The fire is thought to have broken out at about 5.15am on Friday morning in a kitchen of the pub. Two fire engines attended. There is believed to be considerable smoke damage to the first floor and the kitchen has been gutted. The road outside the pub was closed for some hours while fire investigators examined the premises for safety. Adjoining flats were evacuated and shops closed.The Black Lion was recently refurbished by owner Richard Bainbridge.
