From A Single Acorn A Mighty Oak Grows

A famous North Yorkshire furniture maker is celebrating its 50th birthday with the launch of a limited edition keepsake box.Beaver Furniture was founded in 1960 by the late Colin Almack, who created magnificent handcrafted English oak furniture from his home and workshop in Sutton-under-Whitestonecliffe, near Thirsk.Today, the family business is run from the very same workshops and is led by Colin’s son-in-law David Glegg, who continues to preserve traditional working methods and focus on quality and craftsmanshipTo mark their half century, David and his  team of craftsmen, who are known as Beavermen, have created ten limited edition burr oak keepsake boxes, which are carved with the firm’s famous beaver trademark.They will also plant an oak tree for every dining table ordered throughout 2010.David, who is married to Colin’s daughter Lesley and has a son Mathew, aged 11, said: “It is quite an achievement to have been in business for 50 years and we are particularly proud to have reached this milestone in the current economic climate.“I joined the business when I left school almost 25 years ago and served a five year apprenticeship before I became a master craftsman.“Colin’s focus was always on the importance of passing on traditional methods and maintaining the standards that British craftsmen have used for hundreds of years.” Beaver Furniture can be found in private homes and public buildings across the globe, from Europe to Australia.Specialist commissions have included work for Eton & Ampleforth Colleges, the Chapter House at London’s Southwark Cathedral and a number of high profile sports stars and celebrities.
