HDC - £600,000 GYM OFFICIALLY OPENED
Thirsk celebrated the official opening of its new £600,000 gym last week by renaming its home Thirsk and Sowerby Leisure Centre. The state of the art gym and studio opened at the former Swimming Pool at the end of last year completing a major improvement programme for the centre.A new studio, new changing rooms and improved ‘changing places’ accommodation was created alongside the gym – which is packed with the latest equipment. And the old gym has been converted into a studio for activities, meetings and parties. The project was made possible thanks to a £214,000 grant from Sport England – the biggest single grant allocation it made in the Yorkshire and Humber last year. Cash also came from the district council, North Yorkshire County Council and local developers.Members of Hambleton District Council joined funders and representatives of the Thirsk and Sowerby Swimming Baths Charity – which owns the pool – at the opening.“This centre is now a superb venue for young and older people to use to keep fit and healthy for generations to come,” said Councillor John Smith, Chairman of Hambleton District Council.“And its thanks to our funders Sport England - and the Thirsk and Sowerby Swimming Baths Charity – that this project has reached fruition.“The improvements have been well received and have already seen an increase in users – we can now offer a comprehensive range of fitness classes for all ages – from cheerleading for the under 16s to aerobics for the over 50s.”And Neville Huxtable, Chairman of the Thirsk and Sowerby Swimming Baths Charity added: “This gym is a fantastic facility for the town - just what the community has been calling out for. “It’s a huge improvement on the previous gym and much more in keeping with the standard of facilities that Hambleton District Council operates in Northallerton, Stokesley and Bedale – and its new name now reflects that. I want to thank the Flatts Trust , the building contractors Foden Spence and the staff for their role in delivering the new facilities - and customers for their patience while the work was taking place.” Full Article Archived News View All...
