Local Olympic Torchbearers Honoured
Hambletons Olympic torchbearers were honoured last week. They were presented with medals by Hambleton District Council Chairman, Councillor Bridget Fortune. “I know that for many of our torchbearers the opportunity to carry the flame is honour enough,” she said. “Their dedicated, often brave and selfless efforts have led to them being nominated to carry the torch and it is important that we should mark their achievements and show our appreciation as a district. They have been inspirational for the thousands who watched them do their part of the relay.”And the special ceremony also praised local volunteers who gave up their time to act as stewards when the Torch Relay passed through the district on June 20th and thanked the various partners who supported the district council in the organisation of the relay.Councillor Fortune also praised Mike Dobson from Thirsk, who inspired her to pursue a career in youth work 40 years ago.
