Meet Thirsk School 6th form's Headmaster

The 5 Minute Grilling : Mr Mason speaks Chris and Sam’s exclusive interview with the Head of Thirsk School & Sixth Form College Waiting outside Mr Mason’s office, we felt conspicuous and awkward; several pupils walked past and gave us an off look as if to say “what have you done wrong?”  Eventually, we bucked up the courage to knock on the door.  Then we waited.  After a couple of minutes, Mr Mason opened the door to his office, smiled at us, and invited us in. Fortunately, we weren’t there because we were in trouble.  We were there to interview Mr Mason about his new job as Headteacher of Thirsk School & Sixth Form College. Inside Mr Mason’s office there is a big polished wooden table, lots of framed certificates and awards and lots of trophies proudly won by Thirsk School.  Mr Mason asked us to sit down. We began our interview. What made you apply to be the Headteacher at Thirsk School?  I was already the Headteacher at another school and I knew the job at Thirsk was coming up. I knew  what a good school Thirsk was.  Thirsk is bigger than the school I was at and also had a 6th Form which my previous school didn’t have.  Thirsk offered me a challenge as it was a different sort of school to lead and I knew that Mr Lewis had left a good school for me to come to. What is the best thing about the school?  The people.  The students and the staff.  The buildings are not great but most importantly, it is the great students and staff that make a great school. What was you own education?  I went to Primary School until I was 11.  I then went to secondary school from 11 to 18.  I did not do GCSEs, I did ‘O’ levels, then ‘A’ levels then onto Durham University where I obtained my degree.  I then did my teacher training.  I did the same subjects as students today but we were taught in different ways. We did not have interactive whiteboards or computers, at home or school.  We had to write and teachers used chalk on a board.  The names of the subjects have not changed either. Do you live in the Thirsk area?  I have managed to sell my house and I have moved closer to Thirsk.  This has made my drives to school much shorter and easier.  Have you become culturally aware of what goes on in Thirsk?  Not really.  I’ve only just managed to move closer to Thirsk.  I am looking forward to getting to know what things are going on.
