New season for Falcons

Defending Premier Division Champions Thirsk Falcons have made a perfect start to their 2008/9 campaign, winning their first five games. A tough opening fixture at Bradford side Eccleshill United saw Falcons winning 1-0 thanks to a Bruce Cree goal. Further victories included a 5-0 drubbing of local rivals Bedale, a 5-2 defeat of Burley Trojans and a 2-0 mid week victory over Kirkby Malzeard. All this saw Falcons going into Saturday’s game already top of the league.Bramham were visitors to The Flatts with high hopes of taking points off the Thirsk outfit, but it was not to be in a one sided game dominated by Falcons. Within three minutes of the start the home side took the lead. Chris Padget’s ball split the Bramham defence for Gareth Barber to cross and Mark Cobb struck the ball home. Three minutes later Cobb made an opening for himself but his shot cleared the upright. Falcons continued to press forward, with the visitors unable to cope with their slick passing and movement. Barber was a constant menace down the right wing with his attacking play and inviting crosses. Cobb then made it 2-0 connecting with another Barber cross before Bruce Cree added a third. The second half was all one way traffic although Falcons ’keeper Sopterean did have to make a rare save to deny Bramham a goal. It would, however, only have been a consolation as Falcons tore through the visiting defence time after time adding a further seven goals. Chris Padget made the most of an unclear corner six minutes into the second half. Cobb then struck the post in another sweeping move and four minutes later he superbly headed home to make it 5-0, again Barber the supplier. Barber then scored the goal of the match beating the Bramham ’keeper from all but 40 yards. Falcon continued to create chance after chance. Skipper Scott Clark then slotted home from close range before Cobb collected his hat trick.  James Robson then scored twice, one a sublime chip over the keeper, then Dan MCalmont headed home to complete the rout late on in the final few minutes.
