Sessay Cross Bridge in Sunshine
Norman Whitely Cup Final Sessay U13 v Sheriff Hutton Bridge U13 at Alne CCAs Galtres League secretary Tim Wells remarked at the presentation after this match, we all woke up last Sunday morning with plans other than cricket. However, sterling work by the ground staff at Alne following the deluge of previous days, enabled the delayed match to be played in welcome hot sunshine. Sessay won the toss and chose to field. Despite the handicap of bowling with a wet ball, the Sessay bowlers enjoyed early success by making swift inroads into the Bridge top order. Only Johnny Eloner and Ben Harrison played with any degree of certainty. Sessay caught superbly as they hung onto all but one difficult chance and backed this up by being cool and accurate enough to exploit run out opportunities as the Bridge lower order hit the self destruct button. Even on a pitch favouring the bowlers the Bridge total of 52 gave their attack little chance. Opening the Sessay innings, Karl Carver and Felix Adams looked assured despite the occasional delivery which defeated them. After a quality leg glance to the boundary Carver fell to a well taken catch at backward square leg. Adams played in his typically powerful and expansive style hitting two huge sixes on his way to obligatory retirement having reached 30 not out as he dominated the innings. Jess Watson who had come to the wicket at the fall of Carver’s wicket played some crisp forcing shots before driving to the square cover boundary to secure the victory. On this occasion Bridge proved to be no major obstacle for a buoyant Sessay team. In addition to achieving cup triumph, in a severely weather affected season, this result also clinched the Galtres League title for Sessay. Moreover, this correspondent left the ground smiling at the observation of one sage observer who was apparently less than impressed with the athleticism of one batsman; a voice was heard to say, “He turns about as fast as a hippo in mud”. Fitting imagery in this rain sodden season! Sessay won by 9 wickets Full Article Archived News View All...
