Sessay Win the Midgley Cup
On Sunday, Sessay won the Midgley Handicap Cup at Stillington with victory over the host club in a 30 overs per side contest. Stillington won the toss and were given a fine start by their skipper Kevin Borwell and Shaun Speck. Borwell was particularly severe on Dave Johnson who was withdrawn from the attack after just 3 overs, but Stuart Peirse bowled economically and gradually Sessay pulled back the scoring rate, with Richard Till dismissing both openers, Borwell for 31 and Speck for 27. However Ben Walker (28)and Wayne Linton (18) both made useful contributions as Stillington closed on 167 for 5, with Matthew Till bowling a wily containing spell at the end of the innings. In Sessay’s reply, Tommy Kay and Matthew Till got off to a flying start as Till especially found the boundary with regularity. Stillington then struck back when Mike Kay had Till caught behind for 28, and Shaun Speck dismissed Tommy Kay (33) in similar fashion as Sessay wobbled momentarily on 66 for 2. However the dominant Dave Johnson and Chris Till ensured there were no further alarms for Sessay before Till was run out for 22 with victory in sight. Man of the match Johnson was unbeaten on 76 (9 fours and 3 sixes) when Sessay won in the 21st over.
