SUCCESSFUL SCHEME

A scheme which opens up new sporting opportunities for young people in Hambleton has notched up its first ‘success’.Ten year old Jasmine Harrison first tried out fencing last year through the Sports Unlimited scheme. And this week she gained her ‘Certificate in Competency’ which will allow her to take part in the fencing element of competitions organised by the Modern Pentathlon Association of Great Britain.Since that initial set of lessons nine months ago, the Sowerby School pupil has been training hard, attending sessions organised around the district to develop skills. The Sports Unlimited scheme aims to make sport accessible to everyone. The central government project targets five to 19 year olds who already take part in three sports activities a week - it wants to see that increased to five sessions. As a result Hambleton has set up free clubs in fencing, trampolining, cheerleading and boxing.
