The Thirsk Conservative Club Leek & Vegetable Annual Show 2008

It is thought (there are no records) that this show was first tried out round about 1982 and was such a success that it has carried on and become a major regular feature in the club’s activities. Obviously, it has expanded over the years to become what it is today. When one gazes over the exhibits, one is bound to ask, how do they do it? There must be many gardeners’ secrets referred to to attain the size and qualities that are displayed. The best part of this event must be when the auction sale takes place and the proceeds are directed to charities, this year apparently to the Air Ambulance. A worthy cause since they receive no state funding. First prizewinners were as follows, many other winners are too numerous to mention here.Leeks, Beetroot, Peas & Beans, Tony Bardon; Tomatoes, Ken Roy; Potatoes & French Beans, Chris Bardon; Peas & Beans, Billy Musgrove. And now for the cakes: Victoria Sandwich, Tea Loaf, Chocolate Cake, Fruit & Cheese Scones, Ruth Carver; Fatless Sponge, Mince Tarts and Apple Pie, Freda Musgrove; Butterfly Buns, Pat Coltman. The points for first prize were shared equally between Ruth Carver and Freda Musgrove. There was also a wonderful Flower Display, with numerous prizes. A Tombola was also a major feature, with wonderful prizes.
