Thirsk Swimmers at National Contest
Fifteen youngsters from the Thirsk White Horse Swim Team showed off their talents at a national competition held in Sheffield recently. They all competed in the annual ‘Teaspoon Gala’, held to commemorate the city’s historic steel industry. It is one of the few competitions in the country to consist only of 50metre races and - instead of medals and trophies - winners are awarded teaspoons. Swimmers from across the country - including Cambridge, Bedfordshire, Rutherglen (Glasgow) and Thirsk – gathered at the gala. And there were three successes for the Hambleton based team. Ten year old Eleanor Pawlett, from Thirsk, managed to take second place in her Breaststroke race. Swimming twice, Eleanor managed to break the team’s 50m breaststroke record for her age group each time - first in the heat (by two hundredths of a second) and again in the final (taking a further three tenths off the original record). She was joined in breaststroke success by both Jennifer Crewdson (18) and Amie Jobling (12), who achieved third and fifth places respectively.
