Thirsk U14 Girls in Yorkshire League
Who would have believed it, our summer had arrived. On a hot sunny morning of Sunday 12th October Thirsk U14 girls set out on their task of gaining a place in the top eight of the U14 Girls Yorkshire Youth League. Taking their first outing out as a mainly new team and having a new team manager they started their quest in fine form also adapting well to a new system of play.Although the first game proved to be a tough nut to break they held firm and managed the onslaught of Driffield ‘A’ extremely well. With defenders Sophie Maude and a very tenacious Rebecca Wilson clearing the danger area on most occasions. When the ball did manage to get into the circle new goalkeeper this season Lucy Watkiss kept a cool head and cleared the ball. Eventually Thirsk started to find their feet in the game and all players especially midfielders Miranda Turner, Clara Houlden and Natalie Mounsey started to string some attractive play together linking well with the inside forwards for Lizzie Lee and Rosie Lyall. Opportunities for Thirsk to score were limited. A scoreless draw was a very creditable result against what appeared to be a very useful team.Thirsk played their second game against Sheffield straight after the tough Driffield game, so were raring to get a result on the score sheet. Thirsk were quickly off the mark with a fine individual effort by centre forward Rosie Wilson who took the ball from the edge of the ‘D’ and swept in a strong shot from the right hand side to score. Thirsk were now starting to dominate the game creating many more chances moving off the ball well and passing between all players. After a good move, originating in Thirsk’s own half by Rebecca Wilson, a good drive down the right wing by Sarah Turner and a good pass into the centre to Rosie Wilson, who on receiving the ball at the edge of the circle scored again with another strong shot. Sheffield were not deterred by this strong play and on one of the odd occasions they had an opportunity to get near the Thirsk goal they managed to put the ball past the Thirsk goalkeeper on a rebound. At 2 – 1 the game was not finished there. Thirsk’s third goal was scored with just a few minutes of the game left to play, left midfielder Natalie Mounsey playing strongly passing forward to Rosie Lyall to break away down the left wing cutting in towards the circle striking the ball well to a well-positioned Kate Burrell standing at the left post who deflected the ball into the corner of the goal. Finishing the game a 3 – 1 win for Thirsk. After a two game break Thirsk managed another successful result in the final game of the day a 3 – 0 win against Slazenger’s. Thirsk took the game to Slazenger’s and started this game the way they ended their last pressurising the Slazenger’s defence right from the off. Clara Houlden C/Mid constantly under the feet of the Slazenger players, battling away winning the ball for Thirsk to create lots of chances to score. The first goal came when Rosie Wilson struck the ball from outside the circle from the right towards where Kate Burrell positioned at the left post deflected the ball into the goal. The second goal started from the left side of the pitch with a pass from Natalie Mounsey to Clara in midfield who took the ball into the circle taking a strike towards goal towards the left post where again an ever waiting Kate deflected the ball home for her third of the day. Thirsk’s third goal of the game coming from Sarah Turner who received ball at the top of the circle and neatly going around a defender crisply struck the ball that shot into the bottom corner giving the keeper no chance.Throughout the day Thirsk showed great spirit and endeavour, pressing hard and forcing errors from the opposition. They worked hard using good team work and interpassing to ease the pressure they did come across.Well played girls and gratitude to the parents for the support given.
