Yorkshire Day

Isn’t it nice to live in Yorkshire and be able to celebrate the day? Up went the flag, the first job of the day, and then off to Middlethorpe Hall where a warm welcome awaited us. Nicola and Lionel with their lovely smiles of welcome, real Yorkshire champagne served and lots of catching up to do with friends we have made during our visits, and then off to lunch. Beautifully laid tables and once more real Yorkshire wine was served to accompany the excellent lunch. What an effort the chefs made to give us a lovely celebration meal. We had thought this year we would not be able to attend a wedding, but lo-and-behold as we left the dining room what should we see but a bride accompanied by her bridesmaid and father coming down the stairs. They were so happy and were so willing to pose for us prior to their celebration. A very nice day all told. How time seems to fly by but once again, the day for the Open Air Service at Rievaulx was upon us. A beautiful day and, as usual, lots of people gathered in the field next to the Abbey. Audrey and friends delighted the congregation with songs and the Rev Alan Coates from Danby gave us a message. What a lot of things he says to excite our minds and make us all think we should really try a little harder to help other people. During the service, or should I say at the very start, what should there be but a fly past of aircraft from the Sunderland show followed by two bi-planes. During the service a heron flew over and we were accompanied by the calls of sheep and the birds, all of which added to the pleasure of the afternoon. All too soon the service came to an end.Another day and another year gone by and it was time for the Ripon Carnival. A day filled with lots of laughter as usual and the parade of floats. What an effort is put in to give everybody such pleasure. Wagons, cars (Marion and John in their vintage car), Morris Dancers, swimmers, men on stilts and a vast array of stewards and the band, all led by Wilfrid on horseback and the Mayor. A very happy afternoon with lots of happy people. Why can’t we all be happier people and be ready to help others? On our way back to the car we looked in wonder as usual, at the lamp post which was a Victorian Foul Gas Burning Lamp now converted to electric with the updating of the sewage systems. How times have changed!
