As the summer draws to a close, Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers have been making the most of the longer days and warmer weather with a very busy week’s racing.
First up was the 72nd Roseberry Topping Fell Race which was the ninth race in the Esk Valley Summer Fell Race Series.
It was a beautiful evening for a run up Roseberry, completed by Paul Chapman in 19:14, Louise Mayfield in 21:01 and Lucy Sillars in 23:44 with Esther Harrison marshalling the junior race which her two girls were competing in.
Contributions from the race went to the National Trust to support maintaining the path and steps up to Roseberry Topping.
Over in Wass Woods on the same evening there was also the very well attended club Summer 2 mile Handicap race which was won by Alex Miller.
The weekend saw several more races, with a great turnout by the Harriers at the Tripsdale Trot which is part of the Bilsdale Show and covers 10km from the show field up to Nab End Moor, Hagg House Moor and then a boggy descent.
The racers set off to the theme from Chariots of Fire played by a brass band and it was an auspicious start for several of the Harriers racing, with Esther Harrison taking 1st female in 48:53, Sarah Fairhurst was 3rd female home in 51:44, Louise Mayfield winning her age category in 48:47 and all three combining to take the overall ladies prize.
