Equestrian worker Paula Barningham and her daughter Sofie have had their long hair cut off to raise funds for cancer charities.
The pair, from Pickhill, near Thirsk, underwent the chop to raise almost £900 for Cancer Research UK and £150 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Donations are still coming in.
Their efforts are in memory of Mrs Barningham’s mum Barbara Hindmarsh, from Great Ouseburn, near Boroughbridge, who died of lung cancer two years ago at the age of 72.
“It was Sofie’s idea and I thought I’d join in,” said mum-of-two Mrs Barningham.
“We know so many people who have lost their hair because of cancer treatment. They don’t have a choice, but we do.
“My mum chose not to have treatment so she didn’t lose her hair.”
Mrs Barningham, 51, has donated her four plaits of hair to wig maker Banbury Postiche, which supplies wigs and hairpieces to the NHS....

Pennine Region Balloon Association celebrated their twenty-first year coming to Thirsk with a spectacular and majestic flight over the centre of the town last weekend. Despite less than promising conditions at launch time, the Association stalwarts braved typical British weather to come along and celebrate forty years of their group’s existence at Thirsk. Five balloons took off on Saturday morning, very early, amid bustling preparations and lots of very hard work, ensuring the hot air balloons took off safely in the mild morning air and rose slowly and gracefully in a wonderful display as they leisurely flew over Thirsk town centre and over to Sowerby, and beyond. It was a spectacular sight for the few who braved the early morning air. Some locals were disappointed in just missing take off from the racecourse land but they could enjoy the sight of five balloons flying over the town in such slow and silent fashion, with just the occasional roar form the burners directing hot air in to the balloon canopies....

Next a coolly elegant arrangement in which peachy mini gerbera and ‘Lady Mary’ roses, pale green carnation ‘Pistachio’, backed by blackish leaves, Hosta, Bergenia and paeony foliage, harmonized with the bronze leaf pattern on the tall metal vase.
The dramatic colours of red gerbera ‘Maserati’, rose ‘Midnight Sunset’, and small red chrysanthemums shone out in the third arrangement. Next a shell-covered bamboo bowl contained Hosta ‘Sun and Substance’, Phormium and Fatsia leaves gave the feel of a tropical jungle....
